The Need for Leadership Development in a Corporate Environment

Our world has changed dramatically from the traditions we inherited from previous movers and shakers of the world.  From the once aloof and strict environment, human connections have now gained so much importance in the workplace that it seems trust of each other and transparency have replaced the carrot and stick style of rewarding and punishing.

In order for one to become a successful boss, managers need to show intelligence, master skills and gain more knowledge.  However, this is not enough to ensure sustainable success.  Managers must also be able to develop an ethical business conduct.  A management style that borders on moral authority may actually take success and a company’s progress to greater heights.

In a company’s desire to keep on moving forward, its leaders should be able to take this risk and innovate the way the business and its employees are treated. After all, life in general is about changing for the better.

The new dynamic that is being established here is lesser of the formal authority being attributed to traditional bosses.  A leader cannot just bank on his corner office and title embossed in acrylic on top of his mahogany desk.  He needs to earn the trust and respect of his employees so that they follow him without resistance.  Fearing a boss creates good followers with resistance, trusting a leader creates amazing followers that have confidence.  Between the two, the latter will definitely experience more successes.

Why? Making the transition from traditional or formal authority to moral authority creates better interaction between the leader and followers.  Employees will be able to appreciate the professional courtesy being shown to them; they will eventually learn to trust their boss because they will realize that their boss puts people first; they will develop more confidence and therefore be more open to accepting challenges.  These will all in turn, develop better skills in employees equating to a better success rate for the company.

Every business is fuelled to move forward by changes, by innovations.  Without these, the company will remain stagnant.  However, innovating is all about risk-taking and it can be hard to take any kind of risk.  A calculated risk will still incur losses if it is unsuccessful, and if anyone in the company is not on board with a plan, it will most likely fail.  Getting all your people on board requires them to trust you implicitly because they know you have the company’s and their best interests at heart.

The Need for Leadership Development in a Corporate EnvironmentAs a self-professed “manager from hell,” Steve Caldwell learned through the hard knocks of making mistakes while building a career.  Today he serves as a leadership coach, mentor and role model guiding high achieving managers to become the strong leaders their companies, employees and the world needs.  He is also author of the book Manager Mojo – Be the Leader that Others Want to Follow (available on Amazon).

“In all arenas, we suffer from a lack of leadership talent,” Steve observes.  “Every day employees are promoted into management with no training or support to guide their development into leadership positions.  You don’t have to be born to lead. You can learn to lead.”  He can be reached by email at [email protected] or by phone at (415) 670*9543.
