360° Surveys are a Brand of Formalized Gossip
Although begun with good intentions, the 360° Survey has become nothing short of formalized gossip and demotivating information. What seems like a great way to provide a team member unbiased and candid information from those they work with at all levels – above, below and peers – is really nothing more than a tool that resorts to demotivating an employee with useless information. Managements everywhere need to take a careful look at this way-too-popular tool and begin instead to consider ways to develop a culture of performance – one that motivates team members and supports them in their growth. Listen at your own risk if you’re not ready to can the 360° and move on to real leadership.
