Have you ever done a dumb thing? Well, I certainly have and I’ll bet I’m not the only one. As a matter of fact, I didn’t realize just how dumb I could be until I became a manager for the first time many years ago.
Dictionary.com defines dumb as “lacking intelligence or good judgment.” Notice how this is an either/or definition. I either “lack intelligence” or “good judgment.” I know I don’t lack intelligence or I couldn’t have done well enough to promoted.
But the “good judgment” is another story entirely. I just didn’t know what I didn’t know. After all, everything I had ever learned about being a manager came from reporting to one. And I have to say there has never been a more terrible way to learn than that.
The fact was that some of the people that I had reported to were as dumb as me. They ordered people around like dictators. So I thought I should do the same thing.
They worked extremely long hours and expected that everyone should do the same. They thought that opinions were like rear ends, everyone had one and nobody wanted to see them. Well, I thought the same thing.
They thought that motivation was something people did for themselves. And so did I.
These are just a few of the things I thought. So obviously I was one messed up manager.
But I learned. I learned that I had better develop good judgment about people. I had to learn that everyone was not wired like me. And I had to learn it fast.
Speed forward some 30+ years and I’ve done ok. I’m not nearly as dumb as I used to be. So there’s hope for you. If I can do it, you can do it.
I decided I wanted to help managers avoid the heartache, frustration, pain, and irritation that I experienced. That’s why I’m teaching in a Free Webinar so that I can reach the most people.
